Timothy Denton is a lawyer by training who practices principally in
telecommunications and Internet policy and domain name issues, with a strong concentration
on explaining what the technology is and what it means.
He was appointed national
commissioner of the CRTC in 2008. He was elected to the Board of Trustees of the American Registry of Internet Numbers
(ARIN) in September 2008 and re-elected in 2011. In 2010 he was made Chairman of the Board
of Trustees of ARIN.
Prior to his appointment to the CRTC, he undertook consulting, legal and
lobbying assignments for clients and government departments. Alone or with other suitable
consultants, he has assisted clients with issues bearing on the regulation of
telecommunications, broadcasting and cable industries. His practice also covered
competition policy and copyright.
He also regularly collaborates with a network of experts in
telecommunications, economics, strategic planning and management consulting.
He earned a Masters of Laws degree from the University of Ottawa's law and
technology program in 2007. He also holds a Bachelor of Civil Law (BCL) from McGill
University and joined the Bar of Quebec in 1975. His undergraduate degree from the same
university was in political science and philosophy.
Mr. Denton has been a consultant since 1980 and in private practice since
1988. He has worked at a number of federal government institutions: the cabinet office
(the Privy Council Office), the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications
Commission in the 1970s, and the Office of the Minister of Communications in the latter
part of the 1980s.
